CNN hosts a review of "Mama Mia" by Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman, which totally pans the movie.
I loved the movie. Maybe Entertainment Weekly should have sent a Woman to review it? It's a chick flick. What could a man possibly say good about it? He'd look weak. Heaven knows it would literally kill a man to like a chick flick.
Want to know how much I liked it? I cried. Twice. (Well, if you knew I HATE movies that make me cry, you'd scratch your head at this, but for this movie crying was good.)
Does it have corny moments? Sure. Does some of the singing warble? Sure. (Yeah, poor Pierce Brosnan...he does very well for having to reach so far out of his voice range.) Here and there the acting was off (with Meryl Streep being the most inconsistent...everyone else did a GREAT job).
If you liked the stage production, you'll probably like the movie. I LOVED the stage production. Yes, the singing on stage was probably better, and the stage scenery was amazingly creative; but the film has beautiful reality of Greek island scenery going for it, a lot more people in it, and camera angles that you just can't get on stage. At least one family in our family will be buying the DVD. It was well worth the $8 matinee ticket and the $12.75 hotdog and soda.
I highly recommend it.

I haven't seen the musical play either, but Abba music is always fun. :)
My daughter's been begging me to see this...we'll go this weekend. I'll just have to suck it up much as I love to dis ABBA. 8-}
this is one of the few plays i've actually seen, which ended up being great... it's funny to think of ol' Pierce taking a stab at singing, yeeesh
