As I was doing a rough plot of our graduation vacation, I happend to see a familiar name on the Canadian map.... "Kelowna", which in Stargate SG-1 is a nation-state pronounced like male fragrance (cologne) with an "a" at the end. Maybe like "cologna". Well just to help keep it real (that the galaxy is populated with people stolen from Earth), its fun to see that Kelowna is a real place here on Earth, four hours east of Vancouver. According to Kelowna's website, "Kelowna is a dynamic city of 109,000 people in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. It’s the largest and fastest growing city in the Okanagan and the region’s cultural and economic hub."
In Stargate SG-1, Kelowna is a state on the planet of Langara. Well, it turns out that Langara is the name of a college right there in Vancouver, as well as a Vancouver neighborhood.
Check out "The Truth Behind Stargate" for other explanations of real (and realish) things that show up in Stargate.
So it must be nice to be the inspiration for something named in Stargate. "Lynellen" is unusual enough that it's too bad my name wasn't the name of some guest appearance in Stargate SG-1. Ah well, there's still Atlantis I suppose.
